Well, ‘read’ is not quite accurate of a word; it was so badly written that I ended up having to skim through most of it. Look, whatever floats your fictional boat is fine, but for me this was actually pretty repellant.
This rather peculiar twist of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale is quite interesting– I can still quite remember the singular scenes of the oriental palace. Anne Rice has an interesting view of BDSM because she throws out the love, safety, and trust that comes with a BDSM relationship and instead focuses on the terror and fear that one’s “master” inflicts. It has to be remembered that within the frame of a sadomasochistic fantasy like the Beauty trilogy, the readers are invited to identify with and enjoy the predicament of the slaves.

They clearly appealed to young people, and older married people, to gays and straights. That’s when the story got really interesting because I felt like everything that I considered weird at the first half of the book was slowly explained here. I guess if you’re into books where the author’s sole purpose was to write about as much sex as possible, and you’re OK with people treating each other worse than they would treat an animal, you might like this book.
