Zorn is a prolific artist: After all, history has shown us how artists whose work has eluded traditional genres and transcended boundaries have been ignored in their own lifetime, suffering the pain of alienation and rejection, sometimes even paying the ultimate price of being ‘suicided by society.
Well that don’t cut it. Unlike the usual music essay which dissects an artist’s recordings, most of these are very informal and intriguing peeks into the thought processes and compositional practices of the musicians themselves.
I am usually all for diversity, but you get the impression that some of these people would have never even of picked up a pen if Zorn hadn’t persuaded them to do it, which is a shame because some of the bits in here are really interesting.
