The pieces combine Latin American playfulness with French abstract speculation, so that the ostensible subject of a piece often turns out to be a platform for ideas about creativity, mortality, or language.

We no longer believe because it is absurd: The stories in here, while not as polished or fleshed out as some of his more “pure” story collections Blow-Up and Other Storiesfor example are nevertheless refreshing for their slightness, their tossed off air of experimentation–they often feel like rough sketches, or just the beginning of an idea.

The children enjoy themselves the most because they are given very large cards that they love to show their mothers, cards that assign them to various light tasks, especially observing the behavior of the mongooses.
