The festival consisted of chamber music programs, performances ina synagogue, and two concerts by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jan Kubelik. The Suite seems to have evolved from a group fo five pieces for viola and piano, two of which are published as Meditation and Processional by G. Rhapsodie; Processional; and Affirmation. Bloch, deeply moved by the devotion of all its members, promised that there would be some day a token of his appreciation.
skite A march rhythm and a passionate theme from the viola characterize the second movement, titled “Processional. The Processional is marked by the repetition of the two conjunct perfect fourths outlining the interval of a minor seventh. Cast in three movements titled, respectively, Rapsodie, Processional, and Affirmation, the Suite is not nearly as intense as the “Jewish Cycle”; indeed, it is more closely linked to Baal Shem.

Hebrew Suite; Schelomo; Violin Concerto. The title Rapsodie is apt for the opening movement, for it possesses an improvisatory quality appropriate to its content. The leading spirit of this event was the late Sam Laderman, a music lover dedicated to Bloch’s music, though he had never met him. B,och has about it a touch of the ghetto rather than an evocation of the ancient biblical desert.
