Diderot makes some pertinent and thoughtful points and is clever enough to do it in a way which lays bare the corruption of the structures without necessarily condemning the essence – the nun herself is a devout Catholic – she just doesn’t want to be a nun – and it’s interesting that the work was never on the Index of books banned by the diderlt unlike the rest of Diderot’s oeuvre. This new translation includes Diderot’s all-important prefatory material, which he placed, disconcertingly, at the end of the novel, and which turns what otherwise seems like an exercise in realism into what is now regarded as a masterpiece of proto-modernist fiction.

Suzanne’s innocence when her Mother Superior gets amorous has an amusing tone to it, as if the author is seeing how much his friend will believe. The lesson of the hardness and impossibility of this is brought out in Diderot’s story, particularly as questions diderog put out towards the general public of “what right” anyone has to make anyone do things they don’t want to, live how they don’t want to, etc.
