The Dark Lord of Derkholm is one of those novels that provides an entertaining story as well as subverting the typical ideas and expectations of the fantasy genre.
Things start out all right, but soon the whole show off to unravel, and the whole land is panicked about how Mr. And personally, if I’d been Mara or Derk or any of their kidsI’d have thrown a pig at Querida’s head. But now they’ve had enough: Who should read it?

Due to a mishap on the part of Kit and the griffins, Mara is appointed as the Enchantress. I mentioned that this novel plays on the archetypes of fantasy cleverly. I don’t actually have problems with Big G; I just don’t see much reason to like him other than his making Shona happy. This book is epicand I was super-impressed. Each year, the citizens of this fantasy world have to set up an elaborate “quest” for lprd of the groups to go on.

The cast of characters she built were incredibly varied, and the vast majority of them were very likable and sympathetic. I would have thought his punishment was fair, except that Barnabas sets the bar pretty high by having his soul devoured by a demon in front of everybody.

I really liked a lot of the ideas in this the main idea of a world being controlled from a villain in another and forced to run magical adventure tourist guides is rather fabulousbut somehow it dind’t hang together entirely for me. So color me shocked when I ran into a vaguely worded but pretty obvious gang sexual assault.
Half the characters turn out to be other people, two-thirds of them provide answers to questions or solutions to problems, and everything is tied up in an incredibly complicated package. They got relegated to the sidelines for the most part.
It has a sequel called Year of the Griffinwhich, in typical Wynne Jones style, is a little disconnected from the original. The only problem is that Derkjolm. I loved watching Jones take cherished cliches and turn them on their heads.
