NSERC – Policies and Requirements

These are the responsibility of the institution. The Primary Institution wishing to transfers funds to any Non-eligible Secondary Institution must obtain a letter of transfer of funds signed by the Non-eligible Secondary Institution, in which both parties agree to comply with certain obligations.

Please note CIHR allows deferment of the start date of a grant for up to one year from the start date indicated in the description of the funding opportunity if a PI has not resolved pending issues with the application prior to that date. For some programs, an extension is automatically given to allow the grantees to use funds remaining in their account for a set period following the funding expiry date of their grant.

In addition, grantees may not use their grant funds during this three-month grace period. When a grantee moves from one eligible Canadian institution to another, the Agencies will consider a request to transfer a research grant s held by the grantee provided that the grantee has obtained an eligible position at the new institution. The request must explain the need for an extension and provide a date when the research activities will be completed.

The Agency does not publish or otherwise disclose details related to unsuccessful applications. At the request of the grantee, the Primary Institution wishing to transfers funds to an Eligible Secondary Institution must obtain a letter of transfer of funds signed by the Secondary Institution in which both nsetc agree to comply with certain obligations.

All grants beyond the automatic extension 1, 2, 3 Grantees may request one additional extension one year to the Authority to Use Funds period. The Agencies will terminate a grant when the grantee no longer holds an eligible position at defr eligible institution. If both parents are supported by grant funds, each parent may take a portion of the leave for a combined maximum of six months.


Project Changes

Information pertaining to the documents to be submitted can be found on the Termination of a Grant section of the Tri Agency Grant Amendment Form. The unspent funds of grants in certain nsetc, however, are not eligible for transfer to the GRF.

Some grants are not paid through the Common Grant Account and are made directly to recipient institutions.
