This was one of the better “celebrity” memoirs I’ve read though I’d argue Moceanu’s less a celebrity and just a well-known athlete, at least among people in my generation. Other areas she would just graze over quickly. Not once was this one of those “pity me” kind of memoirs. I was disappointed for so many reasons, but most of all I felt betrayed that she had kept this from me all these years.
Bricker, a fellow gymnast despite her disability, idolized Moceanu growing up, not knowing they were actually related until many years later.
You do feel that you are a better person for having understood the path someone else experienced in life and the challenges they faced and the lessons they learned. Even though I’m only five years older than her, I f I remember so clearly hearing a story about Dominique Moceanu at the 96 Olympics that her parents had her hang from a clothesline when she was a baby, and when she didn’t let go, they decided that she’d be a world-class offf. It’s almost surprising that she didn’t have a rougher “dark time” than the one she described considering the physical and mental dominuque she suffered at the hands of domminique her coaches and her own father.
I worked to really, really hard for all of this and I want to be able to pay for my own things. The book opens when Dominique is an adult, and receives the biggest surprise of her life. Besides leaving me with the desire to hear more about Jennifer’s story, Off Balance made me question who paid the highest price, the child with the raw talent that was polished to Olympic gold through years of harsh training or the one considered so defective bxlance birth she was given to another family to raise.
Also, a different look at the success of the USA Gold team! Born with no legs, Jennifer was considered “too much of a burden” for struggling Romanian immigrants to raise.
