Quite an extraordinary book from Paul Auster, not his usual cup of tea. While she planned to become an art teacher, she quickly began to work full-time illustrating and writing books for children, and her first book, Vida de perros [A Dog’s Life] was published in I am tempted to try another book by this author.

Lou had had a part in Blue in the Face, a sequel to the movie Smoke which was based on this short story. From this brief Christmas tale, the brilliant film Smoke derives, and if you have not seen that beautiful masterpiece of drama and comedy, I beg you to seek it out as soon as possible. It’s vintage Auster, and pure pleasure: Years ago, when Auggie realized Paul was a published author, he had asked Paul to take a look at his photographs.

As long as there’s one person to believe it, there’s no story that can’t be true. It’s different, a little odd, but kinda sweet in the end.

The book looks like it is aimed at children, but I can’t imagine any child whose attention or imagination would be captured by it. I reviewed the book on some rival online site, and was pleased that I had a new holiday tradition.

I didn’t get any New Year’s text messages while I read the book, but nobody expects lightning to strike twice. Well, Christmas came and went and I forgot to read the book.

But the pictures, especially of the people, seem inspired by the words rather than lifelike. Oh well, I’ll manage. The story could probably generate discussion on ethical topics.

Both start out with a writer having trouble writing a story followed by someone telling them a story which is then related to us the reade This Christmas story gives you something to think and talk about after you are done reading it. The blind woman received what she needed because she wanted it, to feel loved, and respected, and appreciated and not forgotten. Auster starts with the dilemma of having to come with a different Christmas story, but he doesn’t want to resort to the typical tales we’re used to for that time of the year.

Takes only 15 minutes to read, and aughie illustrations are wonderfully charming. I’ll need a hat or an umbrella or something if I’m going to be walking farther.
