Fecbtbuch speculates based on fechtbucy number of factors that it was commissioned for Maximilian Ia well-known aficionado of military texts. The reason for the inclusion of this painting is entirely unclear, but it may be an allusion to the size of the swords depicted in the illustrations of unarmored long sword fencing. The Goliath Fechtbuch is a compilation text consisting of treatises on a variety of martial topics by several different masters, most of whom who stood in the tradition of the grand master Johannes Liechtenauer.
