I’ve said this before, but here I go again; just because this was published many decades ago, and just because it is assigned reading in some college class somewhere does NOT mean everyone has already read it. Uuego was about fifty percent through the book, bored out of my mind, and I started reading reviews trying to get some motivation to jueho this tome.
There is no real description of the differences that make up the world outside of what the main character is experiencing.

That Knecht comes to realize that Castalia is too isolated from the rest of unworthy, simple-minded humanity hardly gives the impression that Hesse hadn’t settled on this as his ideal world After this final chapter, several of Knecht’s “posthumous” works are then presented.

It was begun in and published in Switzerland hrmann after being rejected for publication in Germany due to Hesse’s anti-Fascist views. Without using fancy language and going on about scholarship, virtue, the aristocracy of intellect, and so on, as his schoolteachers were prone to do, this serene, friendly man had something in his maner and his speech that imposed an obligation and brought out your good, chivalric, higher aspirations and forces.
Hesse’s first heses novel, “Peter Camenzind”, was received enthusiastically by young Germans desiring a different and more “natural” way of life at the time of great hfsse and technological progress in the country. It’s no surprise that this all but guaranteed the Nobel Prize in Literature for Hesse. Yes, this is an excellent book for heavy thinkers.
Sometimes infuriatingly, sometimes brilliantly, with love and no offense intended this book is so German. It seems that he believes that only by perpetually bestowing knowledge to our posterity can we truly realize our placement in history. Piety, which is to say faithful service and loyalty up to the point of sacrificing one’s life, was part and parcel of every creed and every stage of individual development; such service and loyalty were the only valid measure of devoutness.
