But if so, it attracted the perfect target audience. Hollinghurst has superb senses for texture, heft, sound, movement. His words make made me breathless even if his milieu is something that I am not very familiar with: The Line of Beauty is a novel of eventful gatherings rather than propulsive action, and in these situations Hollinghurst proves to be one of the sharpest observers of privileged social groupings since Anthony Powell.
They’re almost like people! It did not ruin the book for me.
I should and have kf do what it feels right to do for myself at the moment. Excellent in every respect. Hollinghurst has the uncanny ability to turn even base, human emotions into beautiful, lyrical prose which time and again made me stop and wonder at his incredible skill. Like, the scenes pretend to be matter-of-fact and part of the holllnghurst, but I bet the ones who enjoyed reading them the most were like, jollinghurst at the funny little men going at it.
But The Line of Beauty is a long book, and even if you skip the sex and the snorting there’s plenty left to enjoy. However, I don’t think that is the best approach to reading. At the end of pine section, with the house to himself for the first time, Nick has Leo to stay for the night. And “of course I read Alan Clark’s Diaries”, from which seemed to come his novel’s sense of the “sexualized infatuation” felt by men in Mrs Thatcher’s circle.
But this isn’t just about a middle-class boy in the rarefied world of Oxford, a servant among lords, a homosexual in a “straight” family, a liberal among conservatives, or young adults finding the harshness of reality after the college cocoon. Maybe McEwan should stop writing sentences too!

It touches on public and private selves, love, beauty, all rather grandiose themes, in a startlingly humorous and down-to-earth manner.
About 50 pages into it, hkllinghurst mind cried, “Noooooo” and I was resigned to watching the full catalog of international TV comedies Hum Paanch, anyone?
I could drink it all day.
