The book opens with a newspaper journalist interviewing the something-year-old Silas Lapham in his private office trying to fit him into the rags-to-riches narrative, which he basically does but Lapham is somewhat irked to be reduced to a cliche. The side plot of Lapham’s daughters and the aristocratic Tom Corey is the best part of the book, if a little melodramatic.
