It may start off as mildly humorous, sort of like the ravings of a pointless uncle, but as I said, really grates after a couple of chapters. Absolutely must read for Indians and others from the Indian subcontinent spoiling the beautiful English language. I have learnt a great deal from this book and have stopped the usage of words like co-brother, good name etc.
I specifically liked the chapters on the use and abuse of the words ‘also’, ‘both’ and ‘only’, but the overall tone that drips with needless acid grates on you after a while. Jyoti babu tears into our English language newspaper correspondents, and shows us how to write clearly, simply and beautifully.
Where it is angry, it is righteous anger because the evils it condemns – if left unchecked – are likely to kill English as a truly expressive medium for journalistic and business writing in India.
