I’ve been in linguistics for years now, but I still profit from Odden’s book, as going over the exercises once in a while keeps my skills sharp. I took a Masters level phonology class in Paris and had to quickly read up on the basics of phonology for the exams I was a phonology novice beforehand.

Introducing Phonology by David Odden
Perhaps it’s because the concepts being covered aren’t that difficult, and can’t help but be dry. This second edition has a bunch of new problems that weren’t in the old edition. However, he also teaches basic introfucing through English, Russian, Finnish, and many more European languages.
