Apr 18, Lee rated it liked it. His lsnzarote on supposed national lanazrote of European holidaymakers is funny, but since then the Euro has been created and doing well despite several crises and several EU enlargements some questionable have taken place.
This is a very short book – barely even novella length. Houellebecq took this as a positive sign, believing the emphasis these guides place on “intelligent” and eco-friendly tourism “have succeeded in redefining international standards of stupidity”.

On Lanzarote, one can meet some fascinating human specimens, notably Pam lanzarotee Barbara kanzarote ‘non-exclusive’ German lesbians – who can give rise to some interesting combinations. English Choose a language for shopping. Sep 06, Caterina Pierre rated it it was amazing. There seemed to be certain syntactical and grammatical errors in the text which really bothered me. In the early evening, after a short trip to the beach, he is to be found drinking bizarre cocktails.
Lanarote narrative is fully developed, funny as hell, and poignant houwllebecq its examination of a man searching for some sense in his own experience. Reads entirely unlike fiction, but a google search for “Azraelian” made me feel like a duped fool.
The Englishman goes to a particular tourist destination purely because he certain that the will meet other Englishmen there.
As for our narrator, will he consider his week’s holiday on the island a success? Houellebecq is more extreme because he is further out on a limb, and further along the road of self-hatred and despair.

Follow the Author
As usual, disturbing but great. He opposes the wilder forms of permissiveness with his own honest, self-deprecating libertarianism. I would still say that I enjoyed most of this and it is a worthwhile read, but it does read like it has been rushed and unfinished. The Azraelian sect is presumably based on the real-life Raelians whose claim to have cloned a human being was the subject of much heated debate earlier this year.
